In 2013, management of the former LSU hospitals in Shreveport and Monroe was transferred to the BRF as part of Louisiana’s privatization of its hospital system. The state and LSU chose BRF as the private nonprofit partner for the hospitals through a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement. In the first year of operations, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals reported $42 million in savings to the state on medical care delivery. Within months after the transition, clinic visits and outpatient admissions had increased substantially at both hospitals, while patient referral queues, wait times and delays were significantly reduced.

University Health System is implementing two new initiatives: expanding and upgrading Telehealth and Telemedicine programs to better serve the healthcare needs of the rural communities of north Louisiana; and implementing national Baby-Friendly patient care protocols – the only hospitals in north Louisiana with this standard of care to improve the health of mother and child.
